A male monarch of a major territorial unit
especially one whose position is hereditary and who rules for life.

Absolute monarchy is a form of monarchy in which the monarch holds supreme autocratic authority, principally not being restricted by written laws, legislature, or customs.

Religion-based states have nothing to offer human civilization and serve only to “murder the souls of its people, killing them deep within while they are still alive and breathing.” He does not spare the theocratic regime that he calls home, writing that Saudi Arabia is “fighting a daily war” to impose “backward thinking.”
Raif Badawi

Kings came into power a number of different ways. ... If the king didn't have an eldest son, then his brother or another male relative may be appointed king. Sometimes kings came into power through assassination or by conquering lands in war. Of course, no king could rule without the support of his nobles and lords.

How did MONARCHS maintain and justify their power? The medieval people believed that the king was in charge because God had chosen him to. They also thought that the king was above the law. ... Some kings would execute lords and mount their heads on pikes to show the power of the king.

The divine right of kings, divine right, or God's mandate is a political and religious doctrine of royal and political legitimacy. It asserts that a monarch (e.g. a king) is subject to no earthly authority, deriving the right to rule directly from a devine authority, like the monotheist will of God.

It originated with the feudal systems of medieval Europe. Under feudalism, there were a few very powerful landowners who acquired large amounts of territory through military force or purchase. These landowners became high-ranking lords, and one of them was crowned king.

"I think, kings usually became kings by killing off all their rivals and intimidating the church and those with any wealth or power into declaring them king. Of course, the next stage was to maintain this position and that usually involved some clever choices of people to govern successfully and continue showing loyalty."
